Comments:

Originally a viola d’amore, converted c. 1800 to a 5-string viola. Neck and pegbox not original. 2 pegs treble, 3 bass side. Breidert & Freyse 1964: Fünfsaitige Viola (Diskant-Viola-da-gamba), probably S. German; blindfolded carved head; Heyde 1976: Bratschierte Viola d’amore; only body and carved head original; back may not belong to rest; ribs shortened and back fold eliminated; tailpiece probably c. 1900. Line drawing identified in 1939 ed. of catalogue but not in 1964 ed.
