Comments:
Dolmetsch 1978: original label, undated (not quoted); original scroll. Pointed corners, overhanging edges, double purfling; inlaid patterns on blonde fingerboard and tailpiece; tailgut. Supposedly part of a set (string quartet plus this) “acquired by Messrs. Hill of London at the turn of the century from an old French chateau” (Dolmetsch 1978). Reference is probably to four instruments (including only one violin) formerly owned by the Dumas brothers in Lyon; however, the double bass from that set is said to be now privately owned in Japan. König 1985 dimensions 170.4, 97.4, 44.0/32.2/57.6, 16.5, 96.0 [not positively identified as Dolmetsch-owned]. Herzog 2003 dimensions the same.
