Comments:

Arched back. Hayes 1930, p. 46: bass bar integral with table; very high-quality workmanship; p. 249: then owned by W.J.H. Whittall, string length 69.2, rib depth 11.8. Dolmetsch 1978: “Found in a Paris music shop some fifty years ago,” i.e., c. 1928; neck worm-eaten, so replaced by Dolmetsch Workshops; single purfling. No. 47, with photo, in auction catalogue for collection of Léon Savoye, at Hotel Druot, Paris, 13 June 1924 (copy at UVa library). Probably same as Jacquot 1900, no. 96: “Basse de viole sans coins, avec tête sculptée et volute à jour, XVIe siècle. M. L. Savoye, à Sevran.” Eagle carved on scroll: Hayes 1930, p. 44; Baines 1966, p. 17. Baines 1966: “? Vienna, late fifteenth century or perhaps later”; body length 66. Date of 1475 given by earlier sources refers to parchment linings, not instrument itself: see Woodfield 1984, p. 231, n. 29. Pegbox very large in proportion to neck and body; tailgut to tailpiece with sculpted edges and inlaid design. Narrow proportion of body width to length similar to VIENNA 2 (Gasparo da Salò tenor), as are scroll and tailpiece.
