Sotheby’s 1977/11/17, lot 240
Caldwell 2012: table with single purfling; none on back. Decorated pegbox and scroll, including large flower on each eye; slot in heel of PB holds watchkey tuners for 7 sympathetic strings (with room for 5 more); bottom block has holes for 12 hitchpins. Fingerboard and tailpiece veneered in ebony with boxwood inserts, and center of TP is fluted. New wood at top of back, with loss of maker’s stamp presumably once there. Repair label: “Restauró e coresse nell’ anno 1838 in Genova / Antonio Gibertini di Parma / Premi[ato?] più volta in Milano / con medaglio etc.” [printed except 38, Genova]: head, neck, fingerboard and tailpiece likely by him, including 12 sympathetic strings (since removed). String length increased by extending fingerboard 2.5 cm over pegbox with removable adapter (by Tourin, for Caldwells). Dimensions: 69.5, 33.7/24.7/40.7, 13.2, 70.4. Sotheby’s 1977: English School, circa 1700; head, neck, fingerboard and tailpiece “are later additions by Arnold Dolmetsch”. Very similar to 1720 Bertrands in Paris (Tourin) and New York (Mace). Owned by Dolmetsch at least by 1891, when it was played to illustrate a lecture by A.J. Hipkins.
