Comments:
Restored by Michael Heale, 1979; he says also previously by George Carley at Dolmetsch, 1949 (but Heale’s 1979 letter to Caldwells says 1947). Back of pegbox is original, sides are new, since original had 4 holes for cello pegs drilled through decorations; head old, but probably does not belong to this viol; neck, fingerboard, and tailpiece new (inlay copied from RCM 2), also soundpost plate. Hebbert 2001: head by Hills; dimensions same as Tourin’s (probably from Heale). Table ornament Type VI, back center BN monogram, upper Type IIIa, lower Type III. Caldwell 2012: 3-piece table, 2-piece back, both with double purfling whose lines cross at body corners; single purfling around C-holes; BN monogram in center of back, and relief carving in V at neck heel. Pegs by Hills Tourin/JVdGSA dimensions: 125.2, 68.2, 30.7/23.1/37.6, 12.8, 70.0. Caldwell 2012 dimensions: 68.2, 30.6/23.0/37.5, 12.4, 69.5. Additional label: W. Hammond & Sons / Pianoforte Makers, Organ Builders, / and / Importers of Musical Instruments / Old Kent Road / Nearly Opposite Surrey Square / August 2 / 1854 [printed except date].
