Comments:
Striped back (3 light, 2 dark, each separately outlined in purfling) and ribs (2 light, 1 dark and much narrower); 2-piece table with single purfling. Photo on museum’s website shows only 4 pegs (in positions for 1, 2, 4, and 6); blond fingerboard (original) has English-style geometric decoration; tailpiece not shown, said to be similar but later. Neck and fingerboard have been narrowed, also pegbox, which is grafted (”joined”) to the neck. Hookbar attached with “two turned wooden nails” that project downward (cf. Blunt in Boston). Fragile condition, with cracks and worm damage. Complete dimensions (except string length) on MIMO, not on website. Vannes: only known instrument by this maker; claims rest of surname is illegible, but not true, though upper loop of B appears to be worn away. (Tourin gave maker’s [sur-]name as Charle.)
