Comments:
Museum’s website: viola bastarda; 1-piece table, 3-piece back. 12 sympathetic strings, added later. Ivory inlay on body and head. Small central table ornament and fleurs-de-lys at corners; back elaborately decorated with two vertical stripes, 5 diamond patterns, fleurs-de-lys at corners, etc.; and name “FB SIMON” within central lozenge. Carvings on back of pegbox. Vidal 1878 notes its ownership by Tolbecque, says it has 6 strings and “des sons ravissants,” having heard T. play on it. Lütgendorff and Vannes say label is printed; latter cites Mahillon’s catalogue and says strings are 6+12.
