Comments:
Mahillon (and website): Grande basse de viole de gambe; originally 6 strings. New neck and other “réparations et transformations maladroites” are “l’oeuvre d’un luthier ignorant et incapable.” Purchased as part of a collection. Of a size to be played at 16-foot pitch. Museum’s website: “Viole grande basse,” German, date “avant 1900”; long and very curving F-holes, with lower eyes set well below body corners. (Depth, given as 33 cm, probably includes bridge.)
