Comments:
Upper bout much less wide than lower bout; ribs and back of willow. Back with fleur-de-lys at top and double-looped inlay running full length of center line, plus wide, scalloped perimeter black-and-brown inlay; rib corners with large appliqué designs in tortoiseshell; inside, only one crossbar at fold, plus soundpost plate. Pegbox original (with carved head looking down the fingerboard), but when acquired had a cello-like neck, now replaced in restoration by Bernd Hiller. Fingerboard with brown-and-white edging therefore also new; elaborately sculpted tailpiece with design echoed at end of fingerboard.
