Comments:
Mahillon says no label, but there is one. Moens: label is almost identical to that in no. 1437 (BRUS 45), though the two instruments are very different in both design and craftsmanship (but pegboxes very similar). Back and ribs of fruitwood (probably cherry), crudely crafted with tooth-plane marks on outside as well as inside surfaces; crudely cut F-holes. Double purfling on table, none on back. Integral bass bar; top block with two empty nail holes. Unusual style of pegbox, à la Praetorius; tailgut. Fingerboard and tailpiece later, perhaps for Mahillon. Some features in common with smaller ex-Correr viols, but others differ. Probably a fake. Awouters dimensions 110.5, 48.6/40.6, 65.4, 21.1, 114.4. Museum’s website: “auteur inconnu”.
