Comments:
Abondance 1974: striped back (3 pear, 2 maple), cracked along inlays and heavily reinforced; inside surface stained with extrait de casse after being attached to ribs and placement of linings, corner blocks, soundpost bar, and reinforcements; label suspiciously similar to reproduction in Vannes (no. 1004). Ribs and pegbox (grafted to neck) also pear; table in much better (newer?) condition than rest, with a rather massive bass bar. Table and ribs too thick to be by Henry Jaye; back might be, but inlays and reinforcements contemporary with non-original (cello-style) neck, whose attachment is unusual. Pencil signature on top block “Ch Quenoil 19.. / Fg [= Faubourg] St Denis” (1878-1952): restoration, or a complete fake? Abondance made a new neck and pegbox/scroll (based on Jaye 1624), also fingerboard, tailpiece, pegs and bridge; possible thinning of table left for a later time. Current ownership unknown, including by Batt’s family.
