Comments:
When bought, was a cello conversion; at one point, had 14 sympathetic strings (plugged tuning pin holes in bottom block), so initially thought to be a baryton; no longer, but perhaps once a viole d’Orphée or violoncelle d’amour. Arched back not original, nor is head. 3 round rosettes; upper and lower bouts curve in significantly to meet center bouts. Final digits of label date unclear: 4th probably 5, 3rd perhaps also. Auctioneers thought perhaps Dutch; website says “possibly Italian”, but more likely German (only other supposedly Italian basses with flame holes are De Wit’s “Rugeri” and Fruchtmann’s “Vimercati,” both questionable).
