Comments:

Mahillon (and website): viole bâtarde. Moens 1995: label matches Brussels 1426 but not Yale Ciciliano. Interior construction comparable to Brussels 1424. Neck and pegbox probably cut from neck of a larger instrument. Possibly a 19th-C. copy of Brussels 1426 (NB only one viol by G.B. Ciciliano listed in Correr inventory.) Exposition 1969: Arched back; one-piece neck and pegbox. Ribs are walnut. Restored at museum in 1965 by Wolfgang Bünnagel. Tourin: no bass bar (!) or back braces; wood liners but linen at corners; tailpiece has hook and eye. Drawing by Raymond Passauro available from museum. Museum’s website date: 1543 (incertaine). Hopfner 2008: dendrochronology by M. Beuting (2007) gives date of 1518 for youngest growth ring on table
