Comments:
Tarisio 2005/02/16, lot 121
2-piece table (not matched) with narrow F-holes; 2-piece back perhaps slab cut with knot in middle of upper bass bout; both are arched with recurve and no purfling or other decoration. Pegbox has fluted back, plain sides and edges; large all-black pegs new since 2005 (3 with double collar, 3 with single but otherwise similar); blond fingerboard also (only 38 cm), tailpiece black and sculpted; tailgut. Varnish not original. Belgian origin suggested by W. Monical, based on similarity to BRUS 65 (inv. no. 2891, ”Jooris Willems tot Ghendt 1642”); made cheaply and quickly; neck (and head) probably belongs to body. Not in Caldwell Collection catalogue published in 2012. Tarisio: “A German violoncello da gamba, c. 1820, unlabeled. LOB 62.5 cm.”
