Brompton’s 2011/06/21
Brompton’s: “probably English circa 1700 and later”; length of back 43.1, string length approx. 40 cm. Seen by Fleming as consultant in preparation for auction at Brompton’s; Peter Horner “was sure [it] was English,” but MF isn’t: 2-piece table; back and ribs may be later, perhaps not all from same time or place. Single purfling front and back; C-holes long, thin, and curly, with notches midway along outer edges. Black fingerboard with narrow blond perimeter stripe. Unstrung in photos. Seen by TGM at J. Topham’s 10/11: 2 repair labels: “Alec Hodsdon / Maker / Lavenham, Suffolk / Repaired 1932” [printed except last line, under bass soundhole]; “Repaired by C. M. Cagle / Feb. 1957 / Spokane, Wash.” [typewritten, treble side]. Topham to TGM 11/13: a hybrid, no idea about its origin; table recut from something larger and with F-holes; dendrochronology gives date of 1699 for youngest growth ring on table; back above fold is different wood from rest; varnish on lower part looks early 18th C or earlier.
