Photos: Table purfling BWBWB; table and back otherwise plain; carving on back of pegbox and sides of neck heel. Sotheby’s: viola bastarda; 3-piece table, 2-piece back, ribs cut on the slab; ebony and ivory purfling. 6 sympathetic strings tuned with wrestpins in bottom block; length of back 65.2. Wells 1976: “a viola bastarde (a somewhat controversial nomenclature) with six sympathetic strings beneath the six bowed strings...” Perl: bought for her by her father; arched back, supposedly Flemish; repair label of 1800, probably from maker who added sympathetic strings [since removed and lost]; previous owner, a Flemish woman, claimed it had been in her family for 200 years and that one of her ancestors had had the sympathetic strings added. New fingerboard and bridge by Ingo Muthesius. Dimensions from current owner (widths on back), who reports Roy Sr. confirmed it’s late 18th C. and has “certain points hinting at Flemish descent.”
