Comments:
Back and ribs of ash. Neck and pegbox (for 7 strings) probably several decades younger than rest of instrument; likely updated by Blasius Weigert (Linz) for use of Matthias Puecher, active as gambist at Kremsmünster until his death in 1743. Two bridge marks on table, giving different string length: 69.5 or 72.0. Rosette; head is a “Hanswurst” = fool, jester. Töpelmann: “highly resonant and powerful...fairly heavy and solidly built...intended for playing figural church music on the gallery of the main church of the abbey...alongside trombones, cornettos, violins and singers.”
