Sotheby’s: “possibly Markneukirchen, late 17th or early 18th Century ... the two-piece back and ribs of plain wood, the table of open grain including several knots, the back and table unpurfled, the pegbox plain and surmounted by the later painted head of a bearded man, with eight sympathetic strings tuned from wrest pins beside the tail pin with hitch pins in the pegbox throat.” Photo shows neck only long enough for 5 frets; very long-stemmed tuning pegs.
