Comments:
Wood not of usual types for either table or back and ribs; covered with thick dark varnish. No purfling front or back; variable amount of overhang at edges; back is flat with no fold. Neck, fingerboard and tailpiece (inlaid all over with a pattern of X’s), and lower two holes of pegbox are new (was converted to a cello when acquired), but upper four holes and scroll are old. Website attribution to Paolo Antonio Testore, contradicting the label which names the older son (”figlio maggiore”) of Carlo Giuseppe, i.e. Carlo Antonio; date also problematic: website says 1717, but it actually reads 1716, and both are impossible because the father lived at least until the late 1730s, but is here described as “the late Carlo Giuseppe”. Website widths now 35.4/27.2/45.0 (all larger: over arching instead of on back?).
