Comments:
Expo 1969: back and ribs of walnut; table has single purfling, back only painted. Table varnish redder than back and ribs, perhaps not by same hand. Integral neck and pegbox; one peg doesn’t match others; tailpiece and bridge not original. Museum’s website: author “Cotton Robert ou Louis”. Vannes: “Son prénom est Robert et non Louis comme l’écrit l’ancien conservateur du Musée Instrumental de Bruxelles.” (Also: “Selon Jacquot, ce luthier serait d’origine anglaise,” but Jacquot says this suggestion came from Snoeck, with reference to his treble now BERB 1.) Mahillon: last 2 digits of date illegible, but Expo 1969 gives “16(7?)4”.
