Rosette; button for tailgut and/or endpin. Shown hanging on a wall, unstrung and without a fingerboard. Owner, a luthier, considers the viol to be 17th-C Italian; but presence of rosette (and overall shape of body and C-holes) suggests instead a Germanic origin.
