Sotheby’s 1987/04/30, lot 93
2-piece table with purfling, 1-piece back with none. Soundholes wide and much farther apart at bottom than at top. Ribs have been rebuilt with contrasting center strip 3.5 cm wide, with horizontal grain. Tailgut now, but remains of ebony hookbar visible. No back crossbars except soundpost plate. Restored by Roger Rose for a previous owner, hence before c. 1988; had previously been a viola. Sotheby’s: body length 35.5, string length 36.8 (converted from 14 and 14.5 inches?), “probably Italian”; sold for £7700 (cf. Montagu 1987, p. 529).
