Comments:
1-piece table with single purfling, 1-piece back with inked purfling (2 lines). Back cut more as slab than on quarter; formerly folded at bottom as well as at top, now with new, blond wood added to ribs. No back crossbars except soundpost plate. “Reconverted from viola / by D. M. Saunders / ALVA [Scotland] 1969”. Perhaps originally a viola d’amore without sympathetic strings. According to Ben Hebbert, very like Walmsley viola in Ashmolean, Oxford.
