Comments:
Hellwig 2011, TieWV 048; Hellwig 1980, no. 039 (according to him, originally a baryton having belonged to Andreas Lidl and shown by his grandson to the Society of Antiquaries in London, 1849; but see Pamplin). Table with ivory edging and double purfling; 2-piece back (arched and bent) with non-original glued-on carved ornament; also has non-original carved ornaments on front and shoulders near neck. Head and neck not original. (Converted to a cello, quite carefully and elegantly, e.g. keeping original 6-string pegbox intact and retaining 6-hole tailpiece; according to museum, this was done “by Hart in the 19th century”.) Measurements 66.0, 32.4/25.1/39.3, 14.2, -. Hellwig 2011 adds: date poorly legible; 2-piece table; upper eyes of soundholes added later; back has single purfling and ivory edging; neck made for cello conversion, but pegbox and head from a Tielke viol (datable 1686-94). Back widths 32.6/25.3/39.3. Origin as baryton confirmed by body outline and originally very wide neck (>10 cm), now disguised by added ornamentation. Not the baryton shown by Joseph Lidel in 1849, which must be considered lost.
