Comments:

Bloomsbury 2008/05/07

Muthesius 1/03: “4 (6) piece bent front with middle joint”; tailgut now, and may never have had a hookbar; “typical old French pardessus neck with head and fingerboard from first half of 18th century”. Pringle: table’s wings in lower bouts are old. Bloomsbury 5/7/08: “Flat back [and ribs] made of ash tree wood. Table made of spruce wood with a central decoration, purflings painted. Head is made by Lafille in the 18th century. Original label....” 3 pegs treble, 2 bass side. Dimensions 34, 15.5/11/19.3, -, -; did not sell. Had 5 strings when purchased by Trimble (directly from Lebet), with string length 32.0, but unlikely to be original setup this early; renecked as a treble (SL 35.5) by J. Pringle, 2010, using French head and pegbox he had removed from the Hoskin 1609 treble in early 1980s; he retains previous head and 5-string PB from Collichon. Mace 2012: “Proto-pardessus”: single painted purfling on front, none on back; back cut on slab, ribs on quarter; parchment on back joints, linen on table joints; bottom block and mitered rib corners are original; always had tailgut; ribs shallow but never cut down; estimated original string length about 33.5 cm.
