Comments:
In poor condition when seen by La Grandville in 1989, converted to cello but fingerboard and bridge missing, open joints and cracks; absent without explanation from table of dimensions in his 2000 article. Nothing known by museum of former owner; no other viols in his collection of 78 instruments. Website: 3-piece back; decorated with tulips; old label inside reads “Sold by Humphrey Salter instrument Seller at the sign of the lute in St Paules Church Yard”; suggested date “vers 1680”, but Salter active 1683-1704. Table ornament Type IV.
