Comments:
Maker’s name stamped on the back near the neck. “Sometime in the 19th C. the renowned Mirecourt luthier, Nicolas François Vuillaume, active then in Brussels, added wood to the shoulders of the viol to square off at the neck, in cello fashion.” Purchased while still in cello form; reconverted in 2001, with new neck and head modeled on FRU 2. Dendrochronology gives dates of 1721 for youngest growth ring on treble, 1762 [sic] on bass side.
