Comments:
Back has 6 strips, all same kind of wood, as veneer over an underlayer; thin black lines between each but no perimeter purfling. Ribs have similar narrow central stripe of same-colored wood set off with black lines. C-holes wide, upright, positioned completely above lower corners. Tail gut. Widths taken on back. Repair labels: “1980 restored by Michael Heale, Guildford”; “Within this instrument a label was [found, reading?] ‘This instrument altered from a treble viol & made into a tenor violin by Barak Norman, 1722’.” (Front portion of ribs probably not original, also neck, FB+TP, PB+scroll, etc.) Designation as French is F. Baines’s opinion, told separately to M. Fleming and S. Groser.
