Comments:
www.cozio.com no. 24672. Label date 1667, not original; scroll by Stradivari but not original to this instrument. “Charles Beare ... believes that the instrument was originally a 5-string instrument of the viol family”; also quotes 1972 Beare certificate: “We consider the actual date to be c. 1690,” and 1972 Beare letter: “At some time in the 19th century the whole instrument was reduced to its present size, and at the end of the century, when it came to Hill in London, the rounded back was made and the flat back removed”; Beares tried replacing it, but sound, while “extremely fine,” lacked power “that one expects from a concert instrument.” As of 1978, Iwasaki still had flat back, kept separately. Cozio dimensions 72.0, 36.0/24.7/44.7, -, -.; those above from Herzog 2003+2004 (she evidently saw both the 1972 Beare certificate and a 1990 Bein & Fushi one).
