MacCracken 2016, p. 195 (table ornament); Fleming 2001, L31 (table ornament [color]; reversed L/R); M. Heale’s sales brochure, 10/01 (F+B, head 3/4)
New ribs, neck and head, and back above fold (also a triangular section at bottom of back). Earlier repairs by Ian Harwood, including replacement of wood on inside curve of C-holes. M. Heale’s sales brochure, 10/01: “considered to have been made by George Miller of London circa 1640” (but other Miller viols are much later). Back design is central grid of 7x7 diamonds without arrows plus smaller groups of diamonds each with a center-pointing arrow at bottom and below fold, also found on viol owned by T. Nakano (ex-Sotheby’s 4/3/85, lot 73, described as Meares School c. 1680), whose table ornament is one of Barak Norman’s designs (Hebbert, pvt. comm., 8/10); but back not in either his style or Meares’s (or Miller’s?).
