Comments:

Sotheby’s 2001/11/21, lot 276

Date given as 1687 by both Sotheby’s and Vázquez. Sotheby’s mistranscribed maker’s name as “Lorris” (error repeated by Montagu 2002). Table with floral ornament and double purfling, in places now very close to the edge. 3-piece back (Sotheby’s said “two-piece back”), slab cut, with single purfling at perimeter, fold, and joints; diamond-pattern decorations in middle section at bottom, middle, and below fold (not connected), plus neck heel. Interior reinforcements include 2 low crossbars, corner blocks, and linings on joints and perimeter, plus vertical battens at regular intervals on all ribs. In 2001 had carved and sculpted tailpiece with tailgut, and fingerboard with scalloped lower edge (Montagu 2002: “new neck and fittings”); after restoration for Vázquez (completed by 10/02), new fingerboard and tailpiece with (blond) hookbar. His website dimensions 71.5, 33.2/24.5/40.8, 13.1, 72.0 (taken on back; depth evidently including table and back).
