Waterhouse 1998/2010: “quinton/violin, ?Paris, ?1740”. 2-piece arched back, 2-piece table, both with double purfling. Ribs “?yew”, cut down below table. Neck and fingerboard modern, “angled for playing as violin, but with a curious step in the neck.” Head grafted onto neck: pegbox modified for 4 strings (originally 5, with 3 pegs treble, 2 bass side) and bottom edge rounded off; carved head described alternately as female and “somewhat grotesque boys head wearing a flat shell as hat piece.” 18C-style violin-type tailpiece, stamped J. Shaw with monogram JC within a scutcheon; [body] crack repair signed John Shaw, Manchester, August 1903. Catalogue dimensions (probably taken on back) 33.6, 15.4/10.5/18.4, 4.0; notes that 1974 report by luthier Marcus Bennett “suggested it is in the style of” Grosset or Guersan.
