Comments:
Neck not original; present one replaces neck for 4 strings with which instrument was found, probably dating from 1960s. Waist very narrow in relation to upper and especially lower bouts. Table nearly totally flat, of extremely coarse-grained wood; back slightly more arched, without fold; both overhang the ribs. Two rows of nails run across back in upper and lower bouts, with more near neck and along ribs--apparently fastened to internal barring. Large for a bass viol, but too small to be classified as any kind of contrabass. Very full, rich sound.
