3-piece table with double purfling and low arching; unpurfled back and ribs of walnut (back widths 32.1/23.1/395). Neck not original, likewise black fingerboard and tailpiece, but integral head and pegbox may be. Label laid diagonally on soundpost plate; spelling very clearly not “Ross” or “Rose”. Crossbars above and below soundpost plate “have little blocks glued to the ribs on top of their ends.” Linen linings between ribs and back (but not table), parchment at back fold, modern corner blocks. Top block not original, bottom block is. Hookbar planed flat, now has saddle and hole for button. Many repairs, table is weak and distorted. Probably late 17th-C., of fine quality but unknown origin (possibly Dutch; not English, French, or German). Rijksmuseum website: attributed to Pieter Rombouts, c. 1700; acquired 1883.
