Sotheby’s 2000/11/16, lot 292
Not in Hellwig 1980, nor in TieWV; Hellwig 2011 notes its sale at Sotheby’s, but says “Eigentümer unbekannt”. Restored by Iwao Mishiko after purchase by Nakahara. Sotheby’s photo shows it strung as a cello, but pegbox not cut down (4 pegs plus 2 pairs of empty holes), so presumably original; elaborate carvings on back. Sotheby’s told purchaser “it came from Finland with an old wood case”. Their body length 70.5, string length 61.6 (but photo shows bridge placed high). 2-piece back; rosette; very dark varnish; very long C-holes. (Nakahara’s rib depth of 16.2 probably includes thickness of table and back.)
