Comments:
TGM visit: 2-piece table with narrow BWBWB pufling, moderately low arching with some recurve. 2-piece back with triple purfling (3/5/3), with fold placed low; it and ribs of unflamed, mildly bird’s-eye maple. Cello-style neck somewhat awkwardly joined to body at considerable angle; no sign of frets. Pegbox only half-fluted on back; scroll has flat ears; 2 plugged holes + 4 now in use = original total of 6. Tailpiece still has 6 holes, plus 3 rows of white perimeter purfling (2/3/2); tailgut. Numerous internal repairs, including worm damage. Catalogue (Thevenon 1998) says inscription on underside of table reads “réparé à Nice / Bovis / François B.F.B. / 1883”; reinforcement of fold signed “Pierre Abondance . . . 1993” ; also restored by Atelier Véro-Dodat, Paris, 1993-94; dimensions (taken on the back) 60.0, - /23.0/35.5, 11.5-12.0, -. “Il est impossible en l’état actuel de déterminer . . . l’école à laquelle [cet instrument] pourrait appartenir.” Bran-Ricci 2006: scroll original. Hirsch & Kirnbauer 2016 adds: table edging altered, table probably completely revarnished; pegs old but not original; tailpiece very similar to SAM 73, upper surface veneered with dark wood; bassbar and linings new; table thicknesses suggest originally built without bassbar; body outline practically identical to NMM 3377. Dendro dates (by Micha Beuting, 2015) 1495 treble, 1471 bass side (both from same tree and correlate with SAM 73 & Berlin 2476). Only one back brace old (at lower corners); unclear if it had a soundpost; corner blocks partly original; top block with 4 nail holes original (similar to MI 404 & NMM 3377); pegbox similar to NMM 3377; dimensions 60.0, 32.8/23.8/35.9, 11.4, -. “Fazit: ein in vielen Teilen originales Instrument, das wesentliche Übereinstimmungen mit Instrumenten aufweist, die dem venezianischen ‘Lirer’ Ventura Linarol zugeschrieben werden.”
