Comments:
Probably sole survivor of set of five listed in Accademia’s inventories of 1675 and 1737. Shown in 1888 Esposizione Internationale in Bologna. Similar to Yale’s [B.] Ciciliano. Carved 2-piece table with single purfling, 3-part back with parchment at joints and edges (no corner blocks); neck nailed to body (now loose), varnish never retouched, body has bad worm damage; internal evidence of various repair attempts. Tailpiece, nut, and soundpost plate not original; bridge may be. Printed label closely resembles [A.] Ciciliano bass in Brussels [i.e., no. 1424]. Dendrochronology gives date of 1596 for youngest growth ring on table.
