Converted to a cello; original outline of viol body clearly visible (extra wood added to make cello shoulders and corners); back is still flat, but no longer folded. Cello neck has adjustment screw in heel. Schmidt 1988, p. 52, reproduces 1983 certificate of J & A Beare: “from the workshop of ... Antonio Stradivari ... largely the work of his son Francesco”; table and back both two-piece; ribs and scroll modern. Sotheby’s: last quarter of 17C; length of back 69.6 cm. Museum: back measurements 69.5, 32.0/23.1/41.7; upper bout maximum widths are both estimates of original outline as a viol. Schmidt, personal communication 5/2000: repair label (on underside of table): “Jos. Wagner, Jahre 1801”. (But website says “Converted into a Violoncello by Jos. Wagner, 1831.”)
