Comments:

Sotheby’s 1998/11/04, lot 154

Not in Senn & Roy 1986. Converted to a cello when sold at Sotheby’s; three-piece back and ribs are bird’s-eye maple; rosette on table (hidden in Sotheby’s photo). Restored as a viol by Petr Vavrous; current head is copy of one by Matthias Albanus. Dendrochronological testing by Peter Klein shows youngest year-ring on table dates from 1633; both halves come from the same tree (also reported in Hopfner & Seipel). Montagu 1999: has a Stainer label, not mentioned in Sotheby’s catalogue; per B. Schröder (via T. Muthesius, 8/19) label not original (handwriting very unlike Stainer’s), so date not valid for this instrument.
