Gétreau 1996: “Lyra-viol (?) . . . XVIIe ou XVIIIe s. (?)” Website: “Lyra-viole, Norman (Barak), Angleterre, fin 17e siècle”. TGM: 2-piece table surely a replacement, with double purfling but very long F-holes set far in from the edges, moderate arching with some recurve: perhaps from a larger instrument? 2-piece back has BN monogram in center and Type IIIa above, Type III below (but large and not very graceful); double purfling. External moldings at top and bottom of ribs, filling in overhanging edges of table and back; strips of black wood at all four corner joints. Pegbox has carved back and sides, probably pre-19C; grafted female head has hair bunched in 2 places above forehead. Hookbar was originally positioned more to the treble side, to align with center joint of table. Top block has large screw head visible, plus handwritten inscription (possibly by Pierre Abondance, who restored it in 1973). Hebbert 2001: BL 61.0; table, fingerboard, and tailpiece not original; ebony external corner supports to ribs. Fleming: 3-piece + wing table with unusual arching; internal fittings all new; body length 59.3, rib height at bottom block only 10.0, other dimensions the same.
