Comments:
Black-and-white edge decoration on table, back, and sides of pegbox (whose back is carved). Painting of 8 cherub musicians on back, which has only a slight fold. Fingerboard elaborately inlaid with honey-colored wood; tailpiece does not match. Tailgut, with no sign of hookbar. Neck set into table by 1.8 cm; just long enough for 7 frets; narrow (nut only 5.4 cm wide), with fairly round profile. Head screws off: man is bald with extremely long beard. Owner described it as Tyrolean, but W. Monical (to TGM 10/16) identifies it as from Mirecourt, late 19th C.; back and ribs of French field maple; fingerboard marquetry poorly done; carved head after 16th C portrait of Tieffenbrucker, as used on inexpensive violins from Mirecourt and Saxony; in general, a fanciful design with barely playable geometry.
