Comments:
Loveless 1956: treble, “purchased from the Brownsea Castle collection by Mr. Van der Straeten for Miss Van Buren”; letter from him to her states it’s 18th-C. French. Tailpiece has scalloped upper end and crown carved in middle; pegs are ivory. Dimensions taken on back, in inches. Handwritten comments on database printout provided by H. Powley (1995): New oversized ivory pegs, new tailpiece. Head typical of 18C. Neck has been narrowed; many patches and repairs to body. From photos: as of 2003, tailpiece is plain; ivory pegs have teardrop-shaped heads; fingerboard no longer wide enough to play on top or bottom strings, except beyond the neck heel where it remains unaltered.
