Comments:

Arched back, overhanging edges. Reconversion from cello in 1884 (Sachs: by Paul de Wit); new pegbox (with an old Italian scroll) added after acquisition by museum. Anger 1886 says reconversion done for de Wit by Heinrich Siefert, Leipzig; gives dimensions (on 2-piece back) as 77.5, 36/-/44, -, says it then had a “vergoldete Engelskopf” decorated with diamonds, also carved and gilt pegbox and tailpiece. Baines 1966 says “neck and head renewed in 1884.” Sachs 1922 says former rosette filled in and painted over with a coat of arms. Otto & Adelmann 1975: at some point had ± 14 sympathetic strings; table of Haselfichte.
