Comments:
Arched back, overhanging edges. Reconversion from cello in 1884, per Anger 1886 by Heinrich Siefert, Leipzig; gives dimensions (on 2-piece back) as 77.5, 36/-/44, -, says it then had a “vergoldete Engelskopf” decorated with diamonds, also carved and gilt pegbox and tailpiece. Baines 1966: “neck and head renewed in 1884.” Sachs 1922: former rosette filled in and painted over with a coat of arms. Otto & Adelmann 1975: cello-style neck and pegbox; at some point had ± 14 sympathetic strings; table of Haselfichte; tailgut; new pegbox (with an old Italian scroll) added after acquisition by museum. Fontana 2022: de Wit bought from Gand & Bernadel Frères in 1883; played in concerts 1884-86; was rebuilt after 1920 “nach historischen Vorbildern”. Dendrochronology by Peter Klein gives dates of latest year ring as 1727 (pers. comm. from A. Otterstedt 11/10).
