Vázquez 1993: Neck and pegs are original; fingerboard and tailpiece are 18th-C. replacements. Photos: tailpiece has geometric design in white inlay on black background; 8-piece back, all one kind of wood. Unusually large lower bout; set up with bridge near bottom of C-holes. Website: restored c. 1976-79 by Raymond Passauro, who believes it was originally an English cittern; but Karel Moens says it’s Flemish, early 18th-C. Dendrochronology gives date of 1637 for youngest growth ring on table. Sotheby’s: back 32.2, SL 31.6; one piece back divided into 8 strips by longitudinal lines of purfling; ribs of mahogany. Montagu 1991: “a made-up body and a new head and neck”; failed to sell (in 6/90).
