Sotheby’s 1982/04/07, lot 280

Not in Hellwig 1980 or Hellwig 2011. Sotheby’s: converted to cello; 2-piece back, flat with applied carved fretted decoration top and bottom (at top, Jupiter with thunderbolts riding an eagle). Head is later and plain. Circular repair in upper left flank. Length of body [sic] 69.5 cm. Body outline “bears similarities to that of a baryton.” Wells 1982: “An enigmatic bass viola da gamba sadly converted to a violoncello...in form and decoration it resembled the work of Joachim Tielke. Although the back was in reasonable condition, the table had suffered over the years, and at some time in the past two large sound-holes had been cut in it flanking the fingerboard. But for the lack of marks left by the bridges the instrument could have been a small baryton.”
