Sotheby’s: “probably German ... the purfling of stained bone in a geometrical design...” (black zigzagging along a wide white band); length of back 73.9; “requiring restoration.” [May be post-18th-C.?] W. Monical (to TGM 10/16): a very late instrument, at least late 19C, “perhaps inspired by iconography or maker’s whim”; country of origin unclear. Ensemble of body, neck and pegbox are only marginally playable, reminiscent of Franciolini’s work; fittings all probably belong together, including neck, pegbox, pegs, and endpin.
