Sotheby’s 1986/11/12, lot 66

Sotheby’s (photo): Pegbox for 6+6 not original; open back for sympathetic string pegs, which are smaller. Neck and string spacing look narrow. Body length 76.6, string length then 67.9. Montagu 1987: “in fairly rough state, especially the belly.” Michael Heale restored as 7-string (1988); says sympathetic strings were 19th-C. Belgian addition; thinks instrument not French, possibly Flemish, c. 1690. Owner: multi-stave front (middle stave replaced, with painted decoration to disguise repair), with single whalebone purfling; back in several unmatched parts, with painted purfling. Carved head retained from “d’amore” set-up; probably a cello before that. Ribs relatively shallow in relation to body size; linen linings with no corner blocks.
