Sotheby’s 1987/11/13, lot 325

Odd body shape, with lower bouts very much wider than upper and steeply sloping shoulders. Restored by Torajirou Sakamoto for H. Nakahara. According to owner, “has a crescent hole for hanging gamba from neck.” Sotheby’s photo showed with 5 strings (2 pegs treble, 3 bass side) but now has 6, replacing former “widely flared pegbox surmounted by a ghoulish carving of a man’s head” (new head carved by Mrs. T. Ohashi); fingerboard and tailpiece also changed. Sotheby’s: small bass, 18th C., possibly Bohemian or Tyrolese; 1-piece back, body slightly indented at bottom block; exaggeratedly angular f-holes; body length 58.0, string length 58.5. (Nakahara’s rib height probably includes thickness of table and back.)
