Sotheby’s 1990/06/14, lot 290
Sotheby’s and Made for Music: 2-piece back, inked purfling. Sister instrument was lot 305 at Sotheby’s 11/25/76 (purchased by H. M. Brown). Montagu 1991: “something between a tenor and a treble...horrible varnish”. G. Wells to TGM 2/04: purchased by art department (since disbanded) of a Japanese department store (Seibu), for a client. Kessler’s prior ownership revealed by chance in a phone conversation 12/05; he didn’t recall from whom he bought it, or whether he made a new fingerboard (or neck).
