Sotheby’s 1990/6/14, lot 292
König: body completely original, all else is new (“the instrument came to the restorer in a very precarious condition, without neck or head”); his dimensions 69.0, 32.6/24.4/40.3, 12.7, 69.3. Owner says it was König who did restoration work on it; his photos (and Sotheby’s) show 6 strings, subsequently changed (by M. Heale for T. Bingham?) to 7 with different head by (or after?) La Fille. 2-piece back with very irregular figure, no purfling. Table has narrow single purfling, moderate arching (plateau), wide C-holes, long repaired crack running from treble bridge foot to bottom rib; wood grain wide on bass side and slightly wavy below bridge. No corner blocks or wood perimeter linings, only cloth; top and bottom blocks and soundpost plate very white and new, likewise many thin vertical battens to reinforce ribs. Sotheby’s: School of Nicolas Bertrand, c. 1720; BL 68.3, SL 66.7.
